It’s a perfect sunny day, a good day to take a good walk with your dog. The gardens never look more beautiful than on a perfect sunny day, and you let your dog play all it wants in the grass, and suddenly you notice your dog munching away on the blades of grass. You must definitely be wondering “why is my dog eating grass?” shortly after which you notice your dog is vomiting.
It is worrying to see such a weird behaviour from your dog and you are not alone with this concern of your dog eating grass and then vomiting, but you fail to realise on thing that your dog has certain impulses too, which can help it overcome certain digestive disturbances. Veterinarians call this behaviour PICA, which is characterised by eating things that aren’t food. Most of the times, when your dog is chewing up on grass, he or she is trying to calm his upset stomach, which will get better once it vomits. Like humans, dogs too have digestive problems. Chewing on grass, that is not easily digestible, will make the dog vomit and clear its digestive problem.
Most Veterinarians also believe that when a dog eats grass, it is trying to make up for some missing nutritional content, although grass is not nutritious. Other reasons include dogs acting out of pure boredom. Make sure you take time out to play with your canine friend in order to make it avoid eating grass as a pastime.
Eating grass is normal dog behaviour. Most dog owners agree to this fact that they have often seen their dog eat grass. Some dogs eat grass to improve their digestion, while other eats grass to thrash intestinal worms that have been troubling them for a while. Nutritional deficiencies are also one of the causes for your canine to graze your lawns, while there is also a possibility that your canine friend has taken a liking towards the taste of the grass or the feel of grass.
Try to provide your dog with high fibre content food, and feed your dog occasionally, leaving it hungry for longer durations also can lead your dog to eat the grass that might look more appealing on an empty stomach. If you feel that your dog made grass his friend out of boredom, then you need to make sure that you take out the ball and Frisbees in order to make your dog get some exercise.
Also make sure that your grass is free of pesticides and herbicides, as there have been many dog deaths reported, due to pesticide and herbicide poisoning. A better option to avoid your dog from eating grass is to keep your lawn properly maintained and trimmed, so that the dog cannot chew off the grass blades easily.
Next time you see your dog chewing grass, do not worry, it is just normal dog behaviour, as your dog is trying to pass the time, or trying to get over an upset stomach.
